Credits are deducted each time you successfully submit a task. If the task fails to generate, your credits are automatically refunded. You can see exactly how many credits a task will cost right next to the Generate button before you click it. The cost depends on the model and settings you choose - for example, generating 4 images at once costs 4x the single-image price.
